Win Over Disabilities: Turn Weakness into Strength

Win Over Disabilities: Turn Weakness into Strength

disabilityDisabilities are illusionary and deep entrenched into our minds. It is just about being able to overcome our weaknesses and channelize all our energy into building strengths. For doing so, it is important to shed this belief that we are weak or disabled in any way possible. The first step to break away from the shackles of disability is becoming independent through our own free will. Only then, the others would recognize our potential and accept us as a part of the lot that remains on its own. Take the life story of Jagseer Singh. He is not just an ordinary man but a long jumper and Arjuna Award winner. People called him weak and a guy with one hand but he braved them all to prove them wrong.

Becoming Paralympic Athletes

The incredible stories of Farman Basha, the Indian Powerlifter, Naresh Kumar Sharma, the 10m Air Rifle Shooter, to name a few. These are the great Paralympics’ Athletes of our country who did us proud and continue doing so. Kumar Manikandan is another example who has held our heads high. Every mountain is scalable for this Para-climber who captured our hearts by conquering Polio and winning another Silver medal for India at the Sports Climbing World Cup. These special gems in our crown are great instances of the sportsmanship spirit.

Getting Into Civil Services

What can be said more of their capabilities and feats? Ira Singhal left us spellbound with her intelligence and tenacious nature. She featured on top in the merit list of the Union Public Service Commission exam in 2014; faces a medical condition of Scoliosis depicting the deviation of spine that makes moving an arm difficult. But she persisted and cleared the highly competitive examination in her fourth attempt while battling all odds.

Equalling her is N L Beno Zephine, a 100 percent visually challenged since birth but strong as ever in her will power. She is the first visually impaired Indian Foreign Services Officer of India who has lost her vision completely. Though, this did not deter her from securing a rank in the foreign services. A probationary officer at State Bank of India in the past, the girl was helped by Job Access with Speech, computer software for the visually challenged in sailing through.

Healing Through Music and Dance

There are many more such inspiring stories. Read the inspiring tales of Sudha Chandran, the famous classical dancer and actor with an amputated leg or Ravindra Jain, the music veteran who was visually impaired since birth. There are more such success stories around and being written everyday at our charitable school for children with special needs, Mata Bhagwanti Chadha Niketan (MBCN). It was started 16 years ago under the patronage of The Ponty Chadha Foundation (PCF) and has been continuously nurturing special talents under its umbrella. Our efforts are trying to bring a wave of change by helping the special kids to turn their weaknesses into strength and win over their disabilities.
