Take the Lead- A step towards Social Justice

Social Justice Day“The hope of a secure and liveable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.”  – Martin Luther King, Jr.

With social justice as an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations, the World Day of Social Justice is internationally observed each year on February 20. The pursuit of social justice for all is to promote development, human dignity, and efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion and unemployment all over the world.

According to Ban Ki-moon, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, “With exclusion and inequality on the rise, we must step up efforts to ensure that all people, without discrimination, are able to access opportunities to improve their lives and those of others.”

We all dream of a just, peaceful and violence-free society, but the question is… how can we attain all that? The answer is simple. We must serve the needs and harness the capacities of all members of our global family, especially women, the young, older persons and persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and the poor and marginalized among us.

Justice starts with us – we all have a role in speaking up for the rights of those in need. Justice does not concern one person, it unites us all. A very famous proverb says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

If you care, make aware!
The worst form of social injustice is slavery. According to the 2016 Global Slavery Index published by the Walk Free Foundation, there were 45.8 million people living in some form of modern slavery in the world. Studies also estimate that millions and millions of children are victimised by trafficking, abuse, hunger and extreme poverty. The situation is terribly alarming, yet somehow, many of us still seem to not care about the need for social justice.

We get the world we deserve. If you see injustice around you, don’t be a mute spectator. Act, care and stand up for the cause. Join hands and help fulfill our vision of a “society for all”, a society where everyone has equal rights and opportunities.
