Bharti and Saraswati Negi‘It’s the fire in my eyes, and the flash of my teeth, the swing in my waist, and the joy in my feet. I am a woman. Phenomenally.’ – Maya Angelou

When her first child turned eight months old, Mrs. Saraswati Negi had no idea that she would be a peculiar case of mental impairment. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Mrs. Negi’s persistence paid well when she looked for speech training and physiotherapy for her daughter who was just 3 years old then. Even when the doctors had given up, she saw a silver lining in the two words – ‘Maa’ and ‘Paa’ uttered by her child. Meet Bharti and you can hardly sense that shewas unable to speak and walk properly or perform the daily tasks in her childhood.

Nevertheless, the patience of the mother-daughter duo bore fruit when Bharti got into a special school. Today, she can convey whatever she wants in few sentences. She has an IQ level of 35 with a moderate mental impairment but people may not realize it while socialising with her. This surprising change began once she was selected for a vocational training on turning 18.
