Donate Blood: It’s Good for Health

World Blood Donor's Day

Donating Blood is a voluntary action and can save life of many beneficiaries. For instance, when someone witnesses an accident, due to profuse bleeding, transfusion of blood becomes imperative to save his/her life. Therefore, blood donation is considered to be the most pious and humanitarian act to save another human life.

Of late, a number of volunteer or charitable organizations in India have emerged for conducting blood donation camps. Hope you are also visiting one of them to donate blood this World Blood Donor’s Day.

We, at Ponty Chadha Foundation, believe in helping the needy and the under-privileged, organising blood donation camps, in association with Indo-German Hospital, have been one of our several initiatives undertaken to help the community.

Most of us are unaware of the fact that donating blood is not just good for others, but for our health too. You must be curious by now to know how. Relax…. read on!

  • As you donate blood, risk of heart attacks and strokes get reduced. By donating blood, oxidative iron from the body is removed and the viscosity of your blood is reduced. The viscosity of blood is responsible for creating friction of blood vessels and determines the damage caused to the cells lining in your arteries.
  • You get the privilege of a mini-check-up. Prior to donating blood, the doctors do a complete check up of your pulse, blood pressure and haemoglobin level. After collection, blood is sent to a laboratory for checking of 13 different tests of blood, such as HIV and West Nile virus etc. In case of any positive detection, the same will be intimated to you.
  • The total iron content in red blood cells and bone marrow is about 5 grams. With each unit of blood donated, about quarter of a gram of iron is depleted. This is replenished by subsequent of food. Thus, regulation of iron level is done, which is good for your health and chances of cancer get reduced.
  • Around 650 calories are burnt per donation of one pint of blood and thus can help you lose weight.

So, now onwards, donate blood not for the sake of helping others, but for your good health too. On that note, we would like to wish for a healthy life for all our readers; because, it’s only when you are healthy, you can donate blood and #SaveALife.
