Benefits of Yoga

“Abiding in the nature of the seer is Yoga” – Sri Sri Ravishankar

Derived from the word ‘yuj’, Yoga is a 5000 year old Indian body of knowledge. This science of twisting, turning, stretching and breathing is not just a physical exercise, but in a broader sense, a unification of the individual consciousness with universal consciousness. The physical exercises and the breathing techniques that are core components of Yoga are merely an outward aspect of this insightful science. A lot more lies beneath this life science and only those who practice it regularly realize its infinite potentials on the whole.

Yoga is partially understood synonymous with its postures / ‘asanas’. Considering the same, the benefits are also perceived on a physical level. But such is not the case as the benefits of Yoga are felt in a profound yet subtle manner. The discipline unites the body, mind and breath and improves the quality of life.

When talking about the benefits that are recognized more on the physical bend, the list is enormously huge. The most promising factor about performing a yoga exercise is the physical fitness. From perfect body postures to increased height, from toning of the muscles to increased lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons, from increased flexibility to multiple pain treatment, Yoga is known to work on all these aspects. The better substitute for gym, Yoga has established its contribution in systemizing the digestive systems and losing weight.

How often do we realise that our body is all inter-connected and breath is the most essential carrier of our lives. However, the role that breath plays in harmonizing body, mind and soul is not known to all. The rejuvenating breathing techniques that accompany the physical postures tend to work on the aspects that are of much benefit to the human kind but are ignorant of.

One of the most important dynamic that one can benefit from Yoga is the stress relief and inner peace. The more we perform these invigorating postures, the deeper we go into knowing our body dynamics and ourselves. The breath that moves in and out of our body, works on the detoxification of our mind and soul, which helps in the relieving all the stress. Practising Yoga on a regular basis helps much with calming the nerves. The increased energy post Yoga sessions helps an individual with increased concentration and awareness, stronger immunity, and higher confidence levels. It has been noted that people who practise Yoga on a regular basis are much more punctual and know how to manage their time in a proper manner.

Yoga’s therapeutic benefits have the power to cure many of the diseases like asthma, arthritis, lower back pain, hypertension, indigestion, etc. With its calming influence, Yoga has shown immense benefits on Autistic children as well. Including Yoga in their regular routine helps them calm their emotions and improve their behaviour.

The Ponty Chadha Foundation has also channelized the benefits of Yoga for the benefit of special children at its Mata Bhagwanti Chadha Niketan School. Here, special yoga classes are organized to help autistic and differently-abled children improve concentration, strength, motor coordination and social skills. The main aim is to help special children overcome their disabilities and turn them into their strengths.
