Nelson Mandela: The man who inspired masses…

Nelson Mandela: The man who inspired masses…We all want love, we all expect empathy, we all believe in equality but, seldom in our busy lives do we really practise it.

The man who pioneered the quest for world peace, education for all and equality in mankind is the man to be admired, respected and remembered forever. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

Born on 18th July, 1918, Mandela was an amazing leader, an inspiration for many for his dedication, encouraging messages and his vision for change. He was one of the very few world leaders to come across as a messenger of beliefs which are unanimous for all. He was the first such person to put an end to the infamous apartheid rule of Africa and the first black president of the country. As the South African president, his main goal was always to unify the countries of the second-largest continent in the world, his native land- Africa.

He defined ‘activism’ for the world: With no fear in his heart, Mandela stood up to those who sought to oppress others. He was willing to give up his own life for the principles of democracy. Speaking at his own defense case in 1964, he said,“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all people live together in harmony, and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

He exemplified the power of human spirit: By coming out of 27 years of incarceration stronger and more determined than ever to right the wrongs he witnessed, Mandela showed nearly super-human emotional strength, inspiring all those who suffer from adversity. Quoting his words “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”

He single-handedly ended apartheid: Through his incredible activism and unrelenting passion to end racial segregation in South Africa, Mandela worked together with other activists to abolish apartheid, paving the way for true equality in his homeland, and setting a better example of justice for the entire world as well.

He was the first democratically elected Black President of South Africa:  Mandela became the first Black president of South Africa to be elected in a Democratic manner. He was inaugurated in Pretoria, the same town in which he had once stood to be sentenced to jail.

He will rule forever: While the physical being of the man is gone forever, his legacy gives him the breath of eternal life as the impact he made on the world will never die. That is the immortality for which we all should strive.

As we remember this beautiful soul, let us all vow to embody the principles for which he stood: Equality, justice, fairness and peace for all. As he once said, “It always seems impossible until it is done”.  Let’s all be inspired to rightfully live up to his ideals.
