Dancing to the Tune of Silence

special school for hearing impaired in delhiDance and music is a powerful amalgamation. Together, their artistic blend brings out the best of soulful performances. But imagine, if we take out the music out of the performance, will it still look complete? No, it won’t. That’s what hearing-impaired children following regular dance routines feel every day. Even then they are able to put up amazing dance performances that enthrall the audiences with their sheer talent and dedication.

One would be amazed to know how these children who cannot hear the sound of music dance to perfection. There is a lot more that goes in preparing such learners to pick up the unheard beats and perform in synchronisation.

Mr. Madan Mohan Jha, the dance instructor at Mata Bhagwanti Chadha Niketan helps the hearing impaired students learn the art form with perfection. He is the man who has taught these children to dance to the tune of silence.

Now, you must be wondering how these children are taught the art of dancing when they can’t hear. Here Mr. Jha’s expertise comes to the fore. He trains students through visual cues like gestures and counts. His regular practice sessions enable the students to develop an inner sense of beat and timing. The synchronisation in each dance is perfected after countless hours of practice and counting all the movements in dance steps.

Mr. Jha with his patience and perseverance has given deaf students a new ability to expression, i.e. dance. Recently awarded the ‘Employee of the Month’, he believes that the way to perfection lies in persistence. And that’s what he invests in every student at MBCN. During the Teacher’s Day celebrations, he put up a stellar performance for the children where he was joined by children across various age groups. While watching them dance on stage, one could not really say that the children were dancing without music because every step seemed to go in tandem with the beats of the songs. Even better was the fact that the children pulled the teachers to the stage as well. From tapping their feet in well co-ordinated steps to making spectacular formations, the children seemed to be shattering every myth of the society one step at a time.

Mr. Madan Mohan Jha is the best at what he does and also passes on the same aura to his students. It is people like him who set an example and teach us a very important lesson in life – art is a free bird and it simply cannot be captivated in a cage of disabilities. Here’s to the man who did the seemingly impossible. Here’s to the man who brought to a deaf child’s ears the most melodious of sounds – the sound of passion and love.
